History

Within a backward socio-economic rural base, Sonamukhi College started its academic journey on and from 17^th August, 1966. The Degree course in Political Science as combination subject was started in 1966 and the same was introduced as Honours subject in 1973. The department takes pride in having many distinguished ex-teachers namely Late Dr. Himangshu Ghosh (Later on adorned as Chairman of West Bengal College Service Commission), Dr. Shamsul Alam (Later on became the Principal of Kidderpore College), Dr. Pulak Narayan Dhar, Late Prof. Pijush Banerjee, Dr. Jawahar Lal Sain and Prof. Chandidas Mukherjee. The Department has produced a number of good students who obtained first class as well as University Rank in the University examinations (Such as Sudhamoy Ghosh, Prashanta Chatterjee, Nilanjan Debgharia, Saikat Mandal, Dibysree Dutta, Chhanda Mondal, Papiya Ghosh, Chandana Ghosh etc.). A good number of them have added feathers in their caps in many spheres of life.

2. Special Achievement (2017-2021):

The department of Political Science has produced a number of good students who obtained first class as well as University Rank and are now absorbed in different notable posts, such as :- Chand Adhikari – Bhara College (SACT), Qualified in the State Eligibility Test (SET) for Assistant Proffessor, Nilanjan Debghoria – Natungram High School, Saikat Mandal – Khandaghosh High School, Papia Pal – Hirbandh High School.

Further to mention that, all the seven students of Honours course have got 1^st class marks last year at the end semester examination overcoming all the constraints and few of them moved to join in P.G. courses; namely, Susama Garai – M.A., Summatara Khatun – M.A., ) Shilpa Karmakar – M.S.W., Souvik Karmakar – L.L.B., Najmun Nahar Khatun – M.A., Payel Mazumder – M.A.

4. Facilities available in the Department:

Apart from the college central library, the department is having a library, namely ‘Seminar Library’ for the purpose of the students as well as for the faculty members. The students can borrow books from the departmental library for a stipulated period of time. The departmental library consists of about 380 text and reference books. The separate departmental room is ICT enabled classroom and is under the surveillance of CCTV. Still now faculty members of Political Science Department follow the traditional lecture deliver method (chalk and talk method). But, the faculty members are trying their best to adopt with the newly installed Power Point Presentation method through LCD projector in the department.

5. Other information:

Amidst the pandemic situation the department found only way to go i.e. E-learning through Google meet application.
