About Department

History of the Department

Our beloved Sonamukhi College was established under the patronage of founder Principal Late Sri Ananta Lal Patra in 1966 with the help of unconditional support and love from the people of Sonamukhi and nearby locality. Initially different undergraduate courses in Arts and Commerce were offered under the University of Burdwan and therefore there was no Physics Department in the College. In 1977 when, for the very first time, higher secondary course got introduced in the college; seeds of different science departments were sowed. Department of Physics of Sonamukhi College came into existence in the year 1979. This was a land mark in the locality and district in regard to spreading of science education. Initially, DPI, WB Government granted two faculty positions for the Department and it all started with one full time faculty member Dr.Tapan Kumar Nag who joined the college in September, 1977. However, at the inception year of 1979, the department offered only a pass course in Physics under The University of Burdwan. In the year 1981 another faculty member Sri Prasanta Kumar Das, joined the department as Lecturer but left in the year 1988 to fulfil his other endeavour. In 1992 Dr. Putul Das joined the Department (later who joined at the Raja Narendralal Memorial College, West Midnapore) and served until 1998 and in 1999 Dr. Bappaditya Mandal joined the Department as Lecturer in place of Dr. Putul Das. Dr. Tapan Kumar Nag and Dr. Bappaditya Mandal made significant contributions towards all round development of the Department so as to make the department as flowering plant. Their enormous efforts paved the way for the upgradation of the Department and in 2007 Physics Department was upgraded to B.Sc (Hons in Physics) and first honours course was incepted from the academic session 2007– 08 under the Principalship of Dr. Bijay Krishna Bhandari. Dr. Tapan Kumar Nag retired from service in the year 2010 as Associate Professor of Physics. In 2015 Dr. Saikat Dalui joined the Department as Assistant Professor against the vacant post of Dr. Tapan Kumar Nag. Sonamukhi College came under the purview of Bankura University w.e.f. 1st Jan 2017 and CBCS course curriculum was started from the academic session 2017-18. In November, 2016 Dr. Bappaditya Mandal graduated from Associate Professor of Physics to the post of Principal at this Sonamukhi College. Later on, in 2020, Dr. Saikat Basu joined as Assistant Professor in the vacant post of Dr. Mandal. Currently, two full time faculty members and one State aided college teacher (SACT), Mr. Bidhan Choudhury (joined the department in 2017 as Guest Lecturer and upgraded to SACT by the WB Government w.e.f. 1st Jan 2020), are serving the Department to carry forward the legacy of Physics Department to spread science learning where it is needed most.

Departmental Infrastructure:

Spread in an area of approximately 1900 square feet, Physics Department has well equipped Laboratories for both Honours and Pass courses.

A] Laboratories: The department consists of four separate spaces for laboratories to serve Honours and General practical classes. We have very well-equipped dark room to perform experiments related to optical courses.

B] Library: The Department has its own updated Seminar/Specimen library. It is quite rich in collection of text and reference books. Complementary copies provided by the different publishers are kept in the department for the use of the students and faculty members.

C] Internet facilities: The department has broadband connection which is accessible for both students and staffs.

D] Class rooms only for Physics Department: one

E] Computers: 06

Extra-curricular Activates:

It is common perception that science students hardly participate in extracurricular activities. But it is not true for the students of physics Department. Teachers always encourage students to participate all kind of extra-curricular activities beyond their syllabus. Consequently, departmental students regularly participate activities like College Cultural Festival, Sports etc. The Departmental Wall magazine “Big Bang” is a result of the combined effort of the teachers and the students.

Opportunities

Students and teachers share very close and healthy relationship in this department. Due to adequate instruments and dedicated teachers, students can perform experiments beyond their syllabus which can be helpful to make them self-employable.
