History of the Department:

The Department of Mathematics of Sonamukhi College started its glorious journey in the year 1979. The degree course in Mathematics as a combination subject was started in 1979 and the same was introduced as an Honours subject in 2001 under the affiliation of the University of Burdwan. From the 2017-18 academic session,  it came under the affiliation of Bankura University.  The Department of Mathematics seeks to enhance the student’s knowledge of mathematical, quantitative and scientific principles that can be applied to various fields of applications to enable analytical decision making. The course aims to create a solid foundation for assimilation of mathematical concepts and structures and build mathematical skills like creative, logical and analytical thinking. The learning process is conducted in a manner that interests students and opens their minds to explorations in the subject. The Department also aims to instill in each student a capability to solve meaningful problems in the service of humanity. Since the first session, the Department is aimed at setting a good quality education in undergraduate mathematics. Being located in a rural area, most of the students are from socio-economically poor families.
