 History:

 

         Within a backward socio-economic rural base, Sonamukhi College started its academic journey on and from 17th August, 1966. The Department of History, Sonamukhi College, Sonamukhi, Bankura has a glorious history in its origin and gradual progress since its inception in the year 1966 in its general pass course under the University of Burdwan. Sri Ananta Lal Patra , the founder principal of this college. In this year Sri Dilip Dutta (M.A. in History) direct charge of the department of History and continue his sincere duty in 2005. The result of the University examination, under the inspiration and guidance of the In-Charge was highly satisfactory. In the year 1985, Md. Shahajamal joined this college and continue his sincere duty 2013. In the year 1998, History honours course was started and 1984 Morning Shift was started extended part of this college.

           It now has six faculty positions, 01 Assistant Professor, 05 State Aided Teachers. Faculty members are trying their best to run the Department smoothly. The tendency of the department to follow the directives of the UGC and to keep up with the latest trends in teaching. Syllabus has been revised under CBCS system in. The format is now that of the Semester system. At present the department has 136(sem-1/2+sem-3/4+sem-5/6) students in Honours and 290(sem-1/2+sem-3/4+sem-5/6) students in Pass course. The Department has produced a number of very good and excellent students who obtained first class as well as University Rank in the University examinations. The relationship between teacher and students is very good both inside as well as outside of the institution.  Besides subject teaching the department tries to make students competent for competitive test of various services.

 Special Achievement (2017-2021):

 

        The department of History has produced a number of good students who obtained first class as well as University Rank and are now absorbed in different notable posts. such as :- Manas Das, Assistant Professor of Dumkal College, Qualified in the State Eligibility Test (SET),M.Phil ; Surya Dutta – Raipur Block Mahavidyalaya (SACT), Qualified in the State Eligibility Test (SET) & UGC National Eligibility Test(NET) for Assistant Proffessor, M.Phil;  Osman Sk- Onda Thana Mahavidyalaya (SACT). Further to mention that, a number of students of Honours course have got 1st class marks last year at the end semester examination overcoming all the constraints and few of them moved to join in P.G. courses; namely: Samima Khatun – M.A., Nasima Khatun – M.A., Priyanka Kaibartya – M.S.W., Supriti Karmakar – M.S.W. , Rakhi Majumdar – M.A., Shilpa Khan– M.A.; Jhuma Barik- B.Ed., Suman Bauri-B.Ed., Priyanka Dey- B.Ed., Mousena Kundu-B.Ed., Sarbojit Roy-B.Ed. and many others. The graph of the departmental achievement is printed with the results of the students.

 

 

Departmental Activities during the pandemic situation:

  • 25th & 26th July, 2020 – International Webinar on Psycho-Socio-Cultural dialectics.
  • 18.08.2020 – Online Extempore Speech Contest

 

Our Vision :

            The Department of History should act as a tool for generating conscious citizen. The department wants to enlighten this backward area by imparting knowledge of the past.

Our Mission :

  • This Department is trying its best to transform lives and serve the society by

educating students, imparting values, and putting knowledge to work with excellence.

  • The Department has organized many national and international seminars on contemporary and classical issues.
  • To extend research activities in the discipline to explore the past of the region.

 

Facilities available in the Department:

  • Apart from the college central library, the department is having a library, namely ‘History Department Library’ for the purpose of the students as well as for the faculty members. The students can borrow books from the departmental library for a stipulated period of time. The departmental library consists of about 100 text and reference books.
  • Still now faculty members of History Department follow the traditional lecture deliver method (chalk and talk method).
  • The department has its own special place in it where the students can meet their special need regarding their study.
  • The faculty members academically help the students in their need.
  • The departmental faculty members can also use the smart classroom to teach the students using modern technology. There is scope of teaching, using power point presentation on the projector.

 

Departmental best practices:

  • Besides the usual “Chalk and Talk” method, interactive discussions are held.
  • To arouse their interest, the multidisciplinary aspect of the subject with reference to various examples, are highlighted.
  • Assignments are given in time.
  • Weak students are given special support.
  • Remedial classes are taken as and when necessary (particularly after the dissolution of the classes before final University Examination).
  • Students are motivated to write for their Departmental Wall Magazine and the college magazine as well for developing their creative talent.
  • Organize State /National/International level seminars.
  • Encourage students to participate NSS, NCC, sports, and other cultural programmes.
  • To strengthen the position, the department organizes generally picnic cum excursion.
  • The cultural Programmes like Teachers’ Day, Fresher’s welcome, Annual Exhibition, Celebrtion Day etc. are regularly organized by the students every year.

 

 Other information:

                  Amidst the pandemic situation the department found only way to go i.e. E-learning through Google meet application.

CHALLENGES/FUTURE PLANS:

  •  Most of our students are first generation learner.
  • To arrange more seminars and group discussion among the students.
  • Seminars of National/International level should be arranged in the department
  • Eminent faculty members from different institution should invited for the academic betterment of the students.
  • Continuation of wall magazine on relevant topics involving both the students and the faculties.
