Mission and Vision

Mission

  • To offer every undergraduate student with a clear concept in Botany from basic to molecular level and to provide with practical field knowledge, ideas and experiences that will serve as a foundation for higher study in Botany and to build up professional careers.
  • To provide qualitative education to the students coming from the poor, backward community.
  • To grow interest about nature, environment and contribution of Botany towards challenging environmental issues.
  • To bring innovation and excellence in teaching and research in Botany.
  • Shaping talents of students, molding their characters and imbibing in them a sense of responsibility towards the society and inculcating sound values.  

 

 

Vision

  • Without plants, there is no life. The functioning of the planet, and our survival, depends on plants. To make understand the students the world's immense wealth of plant  and its effect on  interrelated biotic environment whilst promoting awareness  for its conservation and use for sustainable future.
  • Biological sciences are playing an important and ever increasing role in many braches of science. The Department of Botany recognizes this and strives to ensure that the student must obtain this knowledge through quality education.
  • To be a model for excellence in undergraduate Botany  through its teaching.
  • To stimulate and inspire the students towards fundamental research for well-being of human-kind.

 

Objectives of the department

  • Teaching the fundamental subject of Botany.
  • Participation in Extension activities inside or outside campus.
  • Exposure to nature, its biodiversity and pathological damage in agricultural field through excursion or field visits.  
  • To provide a sound environmental education and to continually refresh the knowledge and skills which needs to be applied to the environmental challenges we face.
  • To provide idea about the requirement of trained and skilled manpower for the ever changing world in science, technology.
  • Promoting various extra-curricular activities among students.

History of the Department of Botany:

           The College was established in the year 1966. Since its inception the College has gained popularity in the Arts and Commerce subjects. The College tried for its further improvement and to that effect it thought of introducing the Science stream as well. The Department of Botany of Sonamukhi College has been functioning since 1979. The degree course in Botany as combination (General pass) subject was started in 1979 and the same was introduced as Honours subject in 1995.

1. Dr. Arun Kumar Biswas: Completed two Major Research Project  (Memo No. F 23 – 218/84(SR-II, Aug 1984 and other is not recorded). Two Ph. D students received their Ph.D degree under the supervision of  Dr. Arun Kumar Biswas.

Departmental Events:

  • Regular Theoretical and Practical classes are taken in the department. Both Physical and Online mode of teaching are adopted in our department.
  • Different evaluation systems such as class test, assignment, seminar, presentation are performed regularly to judge the performance of students.
  •   Syllabus oriented different field work are performed regularly .
  • To develop skill in some area training programme like vermicomposting , mushroom cultivation are coordinated by the faculty of department at least one in a year. For this pupose one vermicomposting and Mushroom cultivation unit are set up by the college under the supervision of Dept of Botany.
  • Syllabus oriented excursions are arranged in botanically rich area like Sonamukhi forest, Botanical Garden, Hill area, agricultural field to study disease of the crop plant.
  • To develop friendly relationship with students cultural activities, Fresher’s welcome and farewell are organised by the students under the supervision of teachers of the department.
  • Some basic research are performed by the faculty members of the department in the field of Microbiology, Mushroom cultivation, Taxonomy and Plants in animal nutrition.

Departmental Library:

Apart from the college central library, the department is having a library for the purpose of the students as well as for the faculty members. The students can borrow books from the departmental library for a stipulated period of time.  The books in departmental library are mainly provided by the faculty members which they got as specimen copy from different book suppliers.

 

                        Internet – connectivity

Department has an internet connectivity in one computer.

 

Teaching facilities:

  • Besides the normal lecture deliver method (Chalk and Talk method), some classes are being taken with the help of Power Point presentations through LCD projector and OHP.
  • On line mode of teaching is also available in college website.
  • Different instruments are available to perform different experiment. Sufficient microscopes are available to observe microscopic features of the plant.
  • Different glass wares and chemicals are available to conduct different practical work.
  • A herbarium  is maintained for documentation of locally available plants.

 

Best Practices of the Department

 

  • The department puts a high priority on student learning in a personal environment.
  • To cope with the rapid changes in the Teaching-Learning scenario throughout the country in the recent years, the traditional chalk-and-talk method is to be supplemented by the ICT-enabled digitized classrooms. Projector is now being set for Power-point presentations. ICT enabled class room has been set up and to be used centrally by all the departments. 
  • All academic activities such as Unitization of Syllabus, Teaching plans, class schedule are planned and circulated well in advance.
  • The examination schedule, evaluation of answer scripts, and publication of results are planned in advance, and executed accordingly.
  • Students Feedback is taken from the honours students and those are analysed and discussed in departmental meeting. (This mechanism has been introduced from last two academic sessions). 
  • Departmental teachers and laboratory staff sit together frequently to exchange their views and solve the problems for smooth running of the Department.
  • Students of the departments are encouraged to participate in the different seminars/exhibitions where they can exhibit various models and present various aspects of Botany.
  • Students are encouraged to participate in the Extension activity of the college and to take part in the community development programme.
  • The students are given free access to Internet in the college for their assistance to studies. Also the department has its own Internet connectivity in the Laboratory.
  • Encourages faculty members of the department to undertake professional development opportunities and for publications, presentations.
  • Priority to establish a good Teacher – Students  relationship.
